Places of Interest in Bhutan

Bhutan is topographically built with a strip of plain in the south, deep valleys surrounded by hills in the central part and over 7,000 m high Himalaya in the north.

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS IN THIMPU

Thimpu: It lies at a height of 2,350 m. Unlike other capital in the world, the very sight of unique traditional architecture of its houses & buildings strikes every visitor.

Memorial Chorten: It is a stupa dedicated to the late King Jigme Dorji Wangchuk.

Tashicho Dzong: It is the seat of the government of Bhutan and the summer residence of the central monk body.

Traditonal Medicine Hospital: It is where herbal medicines are prepared.

National Library: It is a treasure of ancient texts of Bhutan.

National Institute of Zorig Chosum: It is a school where special teaching is undertaken in the field of thanka painting, sculture, wood and slate carving, gold works, embroidery and traditional boot making.

Changangkha Lakhang: It contains ancient scriptures and thanka paintings.

Simtokha Dzong: It is the Bhutan’s oldest fortress which now houses a school of Buddhist studies.

Folk Heritage Museum: It is a showcase of a typical Bhutanese farmhouse.

Takin Sanctury: Takin is the national animal of Bhutan (a kind of deer)

MAJOR ATTRACTIONS IN PARO

Paro is the 2nd biggest town of Bhutan which lies 65 km (2 hrs drive) to the southwest of Thimpu.

Taktasang Monastery: It is the place where Guru Padmasambhava meditated to subdue evil spirits. It lies on a mid-hill of a height of 500 ft from Paro city level.

Rinpung Dzong: It is the venue of the Paro festival.

Ta Dzong: It houses the National Museum.

Drukgyal Dzong: Built to commemorate Bhutan;s victory over the Tibetan aggression, but in ruin form at the moment.

Kyichu Lakhang: It is one of the oldest temples in Bhutan.

Dungtse Lakhang: The temple maintains extra-ordinary collection of religious paintings.

Other major places to visit in Bhutan are Punakha, Wangdi Phodrang, Gangtey, Trongsa, Bumthang, Mongar, Lhuntshi, etc. Longer the itinerary, more opportunity to explore above places of interest as they out of Thimpu and Paro
